VEGAS - With long-time Red Wing forward Steve Yzerman making his return to "Hockeytown" and taking the mantle of the General Manager's position for Detroit, the spotlight is on Golden Knights Assistant General Manager Kelly McCrimmon who's a hot commodity in the hockey world as of late.

TSN's Ryan Rishaug reported on his Twitter page today that if the Golden Knights fail to advance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs he believes that the Oilers will want to reach out to McCrimmon as soon as possible when times allows. He also made mention that per his colleague Darren Drager that McCrimmon is the top candidate for the Oilers.

Earlier in the year, Edmonton fired GM Peter Chiarelli back in the month of January and that was due to the struggles of the team. Prior to the firing of Chiarelli, the Oilers record was 9-2-2 in the first 13 games under new Head Coach Ken Hitchcock and then things went south after that in the remaining games under his watch where they went 5-12-0.

Immediately after the firing of Chiarelli, the Oilers appointed their Assistant General Manager Keith Gretzky to interim GM until the organization finds an official replacement. The Oilers finished the season in 7th place in the Pacific Divison with a 35-38-9 record at 79 points. A long term replacement is needed for the franchise that has been struggling who have one playoff appearance to their credit in the Connor McDavid era.

So moving forward for "Oilers Nation" McCrimmon is an ideal choice for the position given his yeomen's work that he's been doing behind the scenes with Golden Knights GM George McPhee over the last two seasons. McCrimmon in the most recent trade deadline was very much involved in the Mark Stone acquisition. His connection with Stone goes back to their days in juniors where McCrimmon coached the Winnipeg, Manitoban hockey player with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings.

With the Oilers indeed interested in McCrimmon they will need to wait until the Golden Knights are either eliminated in the Stanley Cup Playoffs or after their run is over. Currently, they are deadlocked in a 3-3 series tie against the San Jose Sharks who last night forced a decisive game seven courtesy of the double-overtime winner from Tomas Hertl.

However, another hockey franchise is in the market for a GM and that is the new Seattle expansion team. This past week, Seattle Times staff reporter Geoff Baker reported that the 32nd NHL team is interested in Golden Knights McCrimmon. The Seattle franchise just like Edmonton would need to seek permission from the Golden Knights to speak with McCrimmon once their postseason over and done with.

If Vegas does, in fact, give Seattle official formal permission to reach out to McCrimmon it is expected that they will obtain ownership approval to hire him according to Baker's report.

Looking ahead, McCrimmon is expected to be a highly sought after candidate for the GM position with Edmonton and Seattle in the mix for his services.
